Your Essential Medicare Enrollment Checklist
Turning 65 is an exciting milestone, but it also comes with important decisions about your healthcare. Medicare can be a lifeline for your medical needs, but navigating the process might feel overwhelming at first. That’s why we’ve created a Medicare checklist to help you stay organized, make informed choices, and avoid penalties.
Whether you’re just starting your Medicare research or gearing up for enrollment, this guide covers everything you need to know to make the process simple and stress-free.
Why a Medicare Checklist Matters
Medicare involves multiple parts (Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D), each covering specific health services. Knowing when and how to enroll ensures you get the coverage you need without unnecessary delays or extra costs. Following this timeline will help you stay on track and take full advantage of your Medicare benefits.
6 Months Before You Turn 65
- Begin Researching Medicare
Learn the basics of Medicare, including the difference between Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and Medicare Advantage (Part C).
- Determine If You Need to Enroll
If you’re still working, consider whether you need Parts A and B or if your employer insurance can continue to provide the coverage you need.
- Verify Your Eligibility
Check your Social Security status to see if you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare or if you’ll need to sign up manually.
- Estimate Your Costs
Take the time to calculate monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare plans. This step will help you budget effectively.
3 Months Before You Turn 65
- Sign Up for Medicare
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins three months before your 65th birthday. This is the time to sign up if you’re not automatically enrolled.
- Compare Plans
Take advantage of this early window to research Medicare Advantage plans, supplemental insurance (Medigap), and Part D prescription drug plans available in your area. Use online tools or check with local Medicare advisors for help comparing benefits and costs.
The Month Before You Turn 65
- Finalize Your Enrollment
Ensure your Medicare Part A and Part B are activated before your birthday. Don’t forget to select and enroll in additional coverage like Part D or Medigap if needed.
- Check Your Cards and Coverage
Verify you’ve received your Medicare cards for Parts A, B, D, and any supplemental or Advantage plans. Having all the necessary documentation in place will prevent any delays in coverage.
- Notify Your Employer or Insurance Provider
If you are switching from employer coverage, notify your workplace or current insurance provider to ensure a smooth transition.
Annually
Medicare isn’t a one-and-done process. Each year, you’ll need to review your coverage to make sure it still aligns with your needs.
- Look for Annual Changes
Medicare plans may change from year to year. Watch for your “Annual Notice of Change” documents, typically sent in September or October, to learn how your plan may differ in the coming year.
- Review During the Annual Enrollment Period
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7. During this time, you can make changes to your Medicare plan, such as switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or enrolling in a new Part D plan.
- Assess Your Needs
Review your healthcare providers, prescription drugs, and premiums to ensure your current plan meets both your medical and financial requirements. If not, consider switching plans during AEP.
