A Step-by-Step Guide to Enrolling in Medicare Online
Signing up for Medicare is easier than it might seem—just follow a few simple steps, and you’re all set! The whole process can take as little as 10 minutes and is done completely online. To make it even easier, we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you through it so you can feel confident.
Skip the hassle of scheduling an appointment at your local Social Security office and avoid long waits. Instead, enroll online quickly and effortlessly from the comfort of your home.
How to Enroll in Medicare Online:
1. Check Your Eligibility
- If you’re turning 65 or have a qualifying disability, you’re likely eligible for Medicare.
- If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits at least four months before turning 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). Your welcome packet, including your Medicare card, will be mailed to you three months prior to the start of your Part A and Part B coverage.
2. Start by Creating a My Social Security Account
If you’re enrolling in Medicare for the first time or applying for Social Security retirement benefits, the first step is to create a My Social Security account. Since Social Security handles all Medicare enrollments, setting up this account is essential. Make sure to complete this step before proceeding with your application..
- Visit www.ssa.gov to create your account.
- Click the signup button located in the top menu bar on the far right.
- Follow the instructions to set up your account using Login.gov for secure access.
3. Start Your Medicare Application
To start your “Medicare Only” application, visit www.ssa.gov. On the homepage, navigate to the center of the page under the “Apply” section and click on Sign up for Medicare to get started. You’ll first provide some basic information about yourself. From there, you’ll proceed through the application, where you’ll have several options to choose from.
Choose the option that suits your needs:
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Coverage) Only: You won’t be asked about enrolling in Part A directly. However, when prompted about enrolling in Part B, make sure to select “NO” if you only want Part A.
- Medicare Parts A (Hospital) and B (Medical/Outpatient Coverage): Select “YES” on the application when asked about enrolling in Part B. This ensures you receive both Part A and Part B coverage.
- To access both Medicare and Social Security benefits: Enroll in both programs at the same time.
4. Checklist: Necessary Information to Provide
Date and Place of Birth
- If born outside the United States or its territories, include the name of your country at the time of birth. If you are not a U.S. citizen, provide your Permanent Resident Card number.
Medicaid Details (for Medicaid recipients))
- Include your Medicaid number (State Health Insurance) along with its start and end dates.
Current Health Insurance Details
- Provide employment start and end dates for the employer (yours or your spouse’s) that offers health insurance through a Group Health Plan. Include the start and end dates of the Group Health Insurance coverage provided by the current employer (yours or your spouse’s).
Personal Details
- Be ready to submit your Social Security number, date of birth, and contact information.
Supporting Documents
- Have documents on hand, such as proof of citizenship or residency, if required.
Ensure all relevant information and documents are prepared in advance to streamline the process.
5. Submit Your Application
- Review your application carefully before submitting it.
- Once submitted, you can track the status of your application through your My Social Security account.
6. Check Your Medicare Application Status
Tracking the status of your Medicare enrollment is simple with your My Social Security account. Just log in and click on the “Your Benefit Verification Letter” link found on your main dashboard. This will show whether your enrollment is complete or if your application is still being processed.
- If the letter includes your Medicare number along with the start dates for Part A and/or Part B, it means your enrollment is finalized, and your Medicare card is on its way. Typically, you can expect to receive your card by mail within 4 to 6 weeks, though delivery times may vary.
- The Benefit Verification Letter also serves as proof of your Medicare coverage. If it includes your Medicare number and start dates, you can begin enrolling in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, a Part D prescription drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan right away. There’s no need to wait for your physical Medicare card to arrive before taking the next steps.
7. Medicare Card
The Medicare card you receive will depend on the parts you’re enrolled in. If you’re enrolled in Part A only, your card will reflect that. If you’ve enrolled in both Part A and Part B, your card will display both. Review the example Medicare card to better understand its layout and design.

Tips for a Smooth Application Experience
- Double-check your information: Ensure all details are accurate to avoid delays.
- Use a secure internet connection: Protect your personal information by applying from a trusted device and network.
- Save your confirmation number: After submitting your application, keep the confirmation number for reference.
